Spray cooling with R134a

Keywords

Cooling, Heat -- Transmission

Abstract

Spray cooling is a high heat flux cooling technique, which can be used to cool solid state laser diodes and other high heat flux electronic devices. This study will investigate the beat transfer coefficients obtained when spray cooling with Rl34a. The experiment will u e a single nozzle and a 1 cm2 heated surface to measure the heat transfer coefficient. Using RI 34a will enable heat to be rejected directly from a Vapor Compress ion Cycle (VCC) and provide a lower boiling point compared with water. Using R134a in a VCC win mix oil with the Rl34a in order to lubricate the compressor. Mixing of oil is hypothesized to affect the heat transfer coefficient, as it has been shown to affect heat transfer in the pool boiling and flow boiling processes. The experiment will be conducted in a pure R 134a loop and a variation of oil concentration will be studied from 0.25% to 1 %.
