Title

Design And Effectiveness Of Urban Retention Basins.

Abstract

Retention basins are recommended by practicing engineers and regulatory agencies for stormwater management in new land developments. They may require considerable space which limits their use in densely urbanized areas with expensive land and property values. Practicing engineers very often emphasize flow attenuation and flood control with pollution control as a side effect, but regulators emphasize both functions. Design considerations which enhance the performance of these ponds for pollution control should be fully developed and enforced. Effectiveness of these basins and removal mechanisms of pollutants detected in urban stormwater have rarely been documented. This paper summarizes existing design considerations and removal efficiencies of selected pollutants in retention systems.
