Title

Battery cycle life testing for stand-alone photovoltaic systems

Abstract

Poor battery performance and short lifetimes in stand-alone photovoltaic (PV) systems are major problems facing the commercial acceptance of PV technology. In general, there is a lack of understanding about how certain PV system parameters (such as voltage regulation set point, charge/discharge rates, array to load ratio, and depth of discharge) affect battery capacity and cycle life performance. This paper presents test procedures that simulate the operational characteristics batteries typically experience in small PV systems, and provides quantitative values for capacity and cycle life under those conditions. The primary objectives of this work are to aid system designers in determining the sizing requirements and design conditions for maintaining optimal battery capacity and cycle life, and to estimate battery cycle life under specified operating conditions. In addition this work will help in improving charge controller design.
