Title

Nd:Yag Laser Surface Treatment Of Coating On Polyimide Substrate

Abstract

The objective of this work is to improve the surface properties and adhesion of coatings on polyimide substrates by laser surface treatment. The coating can be deposited by different techniques such as physical vapour deposition, conventional chemical vapour deposition, laser chemical vapor deposition and low temperature thermal spray. The polyimide substrates can be laser-treated first to create a regular, roll-like texture and carbon-rich laser-modified surface to improve the subsequent deposition of coatings on the substrate. In other approaches, the coating is first deposited on the polymer substrate by other technique and then the coating is laser-treated either to melt the coating-polymer interface through heat conduction or modify the coating microstructures depending on different coating component and quality. The laser surface treatment in all of these cases are expected to improve the surface properties, such as the corrosion-, oxidation-, wear and erosionresistant properties, by modifying the coating microstructures and/or enhances the adhesion of coating to the substrate and partial of them have been verified by the surface property tests.
