Title
Piezospectroscopic Measurements On Alumina-Epoxy Composites
Abstract
Alumina-epoxy composites, under laser excitation, are investigated in this work to establish shifts of spectral peak positions with stress known as the piezospectroscopic effect. The measurements reveal the well-known R-lines, seen in polycrystalline alumina, are distinct features in the spectral emission of these composites as well. Results indicate that the volume fraction of alumina in the composite has an effect on the intensity and peak positions of the R-lines, revealing the potential for these spectral characteristics to yield information on material characteristics and response. Based on these results, configurations of embedded alumina nanoparticles can be established for testing and future development as stress sensitive adhesives and coatings in typical aircraft structural configurations Copyright © 2010 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc.
