Abstract

In this entry, I define anthropocentrism both etymologically and historically and offer a brief taxonomy of key positions within it. I articulate the coupling of teleological and normative implications of anthropocentrism before focusing on the role of anthropocentrism in the Anthropocene. I conclude that weak anthropocentrism is the most effective lens through which to view the Anthropocene yet it excludes normatively important perspectives.
