Abstract
This paper presents the design of a low-cost phase shifting mechanism for a circularly polarized antenna element that uses a partially transmitting surface (PTS) placed above the element. Designs for achieving a continuous phase variation, ranging from either (i) 100 to 700; (ii) or 100 to 430 are presented, the former with a wider phase range of 600 but a relatively narrow impedance matching bandwidth, as compared with the latter design whose phase range is 330, but the impedance bandwidth is wider. The realized 3dB axial ratio bandwidth for both is 41.5%, which is relatively wide.
