Mikler Road acreage owned by Andrew Duda Family. c.late 1920s
Views from late 1920s of the acreage Andrew Duda, Sr. had purchased from the Slavia Colony Company in 1911-12. After a 10 year hiatus (1916-1926), during which Andrew and his family returned to Cleveland to earn more capital for their agricultural ventures in Florida, the family returned to Slavia, built their first home on Mikler Road in 1926 and proceeded to cultivate their acreage. Images show celery fields and a number of hired workers. By this point in time, Andrew's daughter, Anna, was the wife of George Jakubcin (a carpenter and builder),but the three Duda sons joined with their father in forming an agribusiness which became known as A. Duda & Sons, Inc. During the years to follow, the company increased its land holdings far beyond the 40 acres the family had originally homesteaded.

Mr. and Mrs. Adam (Mary 'nee Kopca) Klimek, Jr. c. 1980s
The Adam Klimek, Jr. Family is considered one of the Founding Families of Slavia even though the patriarch and his wife did not become permanent residents of Slavia (the Lutheran Haven) until the mid-1970s. Early in Slavia's history, c. 1912-13. Adam Klimek, Jr. (a brother to the wife of Paul Lukas) was called upon to assist with the repairs at the sawmill that was so important to the new settlers in building their homes and barns. Although Adam and his wife raised their three sons in Lakewood, OH, they maintained a second home in Slavia and often stayed in Florida for months at a time, attending St. Luke's, and were actively involved with congregational life during those periods. Adam, Jr. was born in Slovakia in 1890 and died in Florida in 1987. His wife, Mary, was then cared for at the Lutheran Haven Nursing Home until her own death in 1993. One of the couple's three sons (Albert) maintained his own relationship with St. Luke's and the Slavia community over the years and eventually moved to the Lutheran Haven, where he and his wife spent their last years. Photo image, c.1980s.

Narthex and baptismal fountain after completion of construction. 1993
The completed baptismal fountain offered an aesthetic beauty to the narthex of St. Luke's new church facility in 1993. Furthermore, the symbolism of the "living water" (Christ) which flowed into the historic marble font and provided the delightful sound of running water enriched the senses of both members and visitors to the new facility. Fresh green and flowering plants were meticulously groomed by devoted volunteers and made this a peaceful and beautiful addition to the new sanctuary.
