The analysis and design of a costas phase locked loop for the acquisition of carrier phase of suppressed carrier communication systems
Abstract
The problem of carrier phase estimation with the aid of a Costas phase-locked loop will be investigated. The goal will be the acquisition of the carrier from a suppressed-carrier modulated signal for the coherent demodulation of the transmitted signal. An analog Costas PLL will be designed, implemented in hardware, and analyzed both with and without the presence of A WGN. A system of nonlinear equations representing the hardware PLL will then be generated and solved numerically. The solutions to the nonlinear system of equations will be plotted in the phase plane in order to observe the phase acquisition behavior of the PLL. Finally, the performance of the PLL with input noise (AWGN)-will-be studied.
