About This Journal

Published exclusively online three times per year, The Journal of English Learner Education is a scholarly, peer-reviewed journal. Grounded in the disciplines of second language acquisition and English as a second language (ESL), the journal integrates research and evidence-based practices that support the academic success of English learners in PK–20 educational settings where English serves as the primary language of instruction.

The journal’s mission is to disseminate emerging research and effective practices addressing the education of English learners across English-dominant schooling contexts. We welcome manuscripts that examine instructional approaches, standards-based education, language and content integration, technology-assisted learning, assessment and accountability, counseling, family and community engagement, and school-based support systems. The journal serves educators, researchers, policymakers, and professionals committed to strengthening outcomes for English learners and the communities in which they live and learn.

The editors invite submissions in the following categories:

  • Research and Theory — Original research or conceptual scholarship addressing the education of English learners in mainstream PK–20 classrooms.
  • Effective Practices — Evidence-based or promising instructional and support practices that improve student achievement and educational access.
  • Commentaries — Scholarly discussions of policies, practices, and issues affecting English learners and their families.
