Photo Description

This is one of the 85-foot antennas making up the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Manned Space Flight Network for tracking and acquiring data from manned spacecraft at lunar distances. Located near Madrid, Spain, this antenna functions along with two other NASA 85-foot station locations at 120-degree intervals around the Earth, Goldstone, California, and Canberra, Australia. There are a total of 14 stations in the network, eleven of them 30-foot antennas for Earth-orbital support. These are supplemented by four tracking ships and eight instrumented aircraft. The 85-foot stations are located so that, despite the rotation of the Earth and the movement of the Moon around the Earth, one of them will always have a direct view of the spacecraft during a lunar mission.
