Photo Description
This picture of the Mars south polar cap region, which includes the south pole, shows a wide variety of crater sizes and forms as well as linear and blotchy features not obviously related to cratering. The seasonally varying polar cap may be a layer of carbon dioxide ice (finely granulated dry ice) a few feet in depth or a thin layer of water ice less than an inch deep. The sunset shadow line (evening terminator) appears on the east (right) of this picture. The grid of small black dots is in the focal plane of the camera and will be used for making precise measurements on the pictures after further computer processing.
