Photo Description

This picture shows the broad dark Mare Cimmerium above the South Polar Cap and the narrow dark band, Cerberus, to the north. The north polar hood shows prominently at the top. This may be an atmospheric haze or diffuse surface frostiness beginning to form during the northern autumn. The irregular edge of the South Polar Cap is clearly evident. Three very small, dark dots are part of a reference grid fixed in the camera. Parallel streaks of "electronic noise" are visible.
