These pictures are Nos. 73 and 74 of the Mariner 7 far-encounter sequence. They were taken at an interval of 47 minutes during which time Mars rotated through an angle of 12 degrees. They are presented here in a form suitable for viewing through a stereoscope. Prominent in the picture are the bright, ring-shaped Nix Olympica and the complex bright streaks of the Tharsis Candor region. At the right edge the "canal" Agathadaemon disappears beyond the horizon. The dark, diffuse area at the lower left is Mare Sirenum. Note also the linear cleft in the south polar cap.
