This Mars mosaic is made up of four wide-angle pictures taken by Mariner 6 during its close passage of the planet on July 31, 1969. This east-west swath in the slightly overlapping pictures covers an area 450 miles deep and 2,500 miles long, parallel to and about 15° south of the Martian equator. Mariner 6 took the pictures at 85-second intervals as it flew eastward into the night-time shadow to the right. The dark spot which is repeated on the right of each frame is a blemish on the TV camera. A grid of black reference dots and trailing white streaks and some electronic noise remain to be removed by further computer processing. Mariner 6 took 74 approach and high-resolution pictures of Mars on July 29-30. Mariner 7 added 126 Mars views on August 2-4.
