Photo Description
Mariner 6 near encounter picture 18. One of the truly striking and inspiring space pictures of this decade. This narrow-angle picture extends 63 miles E-W by 48 miles N-S. The large crater is about 24 miles across. It shows several slump terraces, especially on the west inner wall (north is at top) and radial gullies or chutes on the south wall; both are features typical of some of the large craters on the Moon. The small crater on the west wall, with a recognizable central peak, is clearly younger, as is the still smaller crater just below, to the southeast, on the crater floor. On the lower left is a small, prominent crater roughly comparable in size to Meteor Crater, Arizona. Just to the northeast is an irregular broad trough bearing northeast which is closely similar to troughs seen on the lunar surface. Electronic processing will immeasurably improve this picture which is impressive even in this "raw" form. The picture center is located at longitude 357° E, latitude 17° S. The distance from the camera is 2300 miles. The local solar time is about 3:30 PM, and the camera view angle is 30° from the local vertical. This picture was taken during a 20-minute period surrounding Mariner's closest approach to Mars at 10:19 PM PDT on July 30, 1969.
