    Photo Description

The large quasi-circular bright region, Elysium, just above the center of the disk, shows detailed bright structure whose appearance varies as Mars rotates ahead of the spacecraft. Two types of boundaries between dark and light areas appear. The edges of the club-shaped dark region, Cerberus, just below Elysium, are well defined. The northern boundary of Mare Cimmerium below it exhibits a blotchy structure, suggestive of heavy cratering. An array of black reference dots appears on the surface.
