Photo Description

The prominent dark Syrtis Major region shows near the left edge of the planet. Extending northward from its northern tip, a well-known "canal," the Nilosyrtis can be seen. The term canal, from the Italian canale, or channel, was first made popular as applied to Mars features by the Italian astronomer G. Schiaparelli in 1869. In addition to such well-known objects, much previously unknown detail appears in the dark areas. The narrow band extending northward from the large dark mass of Mare Cimmerium near the center of the photo is such a feature. A number of detached and partly detached oval features highly suggestive of craters appear along the edge of the polar cap. The smallest of these has a diameter of about 20 miles.
