This photograph shows a crystal of the compound semiconductor material germanium selenide which was grown on Skylab as part of Experiment M556, Vapor Growth of II-VI Compounds. The crystal is about 1 mm thick, 4 mm wide, and 25 mm long (1 inch). This represents an enormous improvement in size and shape over similar crystals grown on Earth. M556 is one of the series of experiments using the Electric Multipurpose Electric Furnace developed for Skylab by the Marshall Space Flight Center. The Principal Investigator for this experiment is Dr. Harry Wiedemeier of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
