Photo Description
This photograph shows a sealed quartz ampule containing mixed crystals of the compound semiconductor germanium selenide. These crystals were grown on Skylab as part of Experiment M556, Vapor Growth of II-VI Compounds. This is one of a series of experiments performed in the Multipurpose Electric Furnace developed by the Marshall Space Flight Center. These crystals were grown by heating the compound, allowing it to vaporize and chemically transport through the temperature gradient in iodine vapor, and then condense into the crystal form. The samples are being evaluated for chemical composition, homogeneity, crystal perfection, trace impurities, and optical and electrical properties, in comparison with samples produced on Earth. The reflection in the center of the ampule is a single crystal approximately 1 mm thick, 4 mm wide, and 25 mm long (1 inch). This crystal represents an enormous improvement in size and shape over similar crystals grown on Earth. The Principal Investigator for this experiment is Dr. Harry Wiedemeier of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
