Why is it that some mentor-protégé relationships seem charmed whereas others appear catastrophic? The mentor-protégé relationship, like most relationships, is a dynamic association fraught with opportunities for success as well as disaster. The relatively predictable trajectory of this relationship enables informed mentors and protégés to better navigate those periods during which conflict and poor judgment may undermine the relationship. The conventional trajectory of a mentor-protégé relationship and related reactions as well as functional and dysfunctional responses will be discussed.
