Chancel area of 1957 church, as it appeared before revision in 1986
The chancel are of St. Luke's Lutheran church, as it appeared from 1957(the remodeling and expansion of the 1939 building)to 1986, when the interior space was remodeled again, to add more seating. In this photo, taken on Palm Sunday, only a hint of the transepts leading out to the sides of the chancel are visible. Pews filled the north (to the left) transept; the south (to the right) transept contained the radio room, vestry, sacristy and church offices. To the immediate right of the carved pulpit one can see the dark wood casing of the Allen organ positioned there (until 1986, when it was moved to another spot). From this venue, the organist could see worshipers in the nave and north transept, as well as the choir, which sometimes performed from the balcony at the rear of the nave, and could also see the light mounted on the exterior of the radio studio to signal that the service was "on the air." It should be noted that the communion rails in the chancel included padded "kneelers" and the custom of the congregation at that time was for the communicants to kneel during the absolution and distribution of the Lord's Supper.

Church at the Crossroads- media coverage about St. Luke's church expansion. Oct. 1990
In an article written by Mark Pankowski and published in the Seminole Extra section of "The Orlando Sentinel" on October 21, 1990, Rev. E.J. Rossow is interviewed about the congregation's dilemma in accommodating the 500 new members who joined St. Luke's during the 8 years of his ministry. The article's title, "Worshipers Face Tough Choice" sums up the dilemma that led to a compromise solution: to retain the portion of the brick church built in 1939, but to demolish the sections added in 1957 in order to have space for a large new sanctuary, offices and classrooms. A colored photo of the recently-remodeled altar area accompanied the article.

Plan and elevation for pulpit of St. Luke's remodeled church. 1957
A blueprint of the Plan and Elevation of the Pulpit, prepared by Joseph J. Noe Studios, New York, NY resides in St. Luke's Church Archives. In 1956, congregation had engaged noted architect James Gamble Rogers II to design an enlarged sanctuary and office facility, incorporating the first brick church building erected in 1939. Some of the design work for carved furnishings, etc., was outsource to other firms. This plan (scale 1"-1')is substantially the same as the final, "as built" version. Significant in the design of this carved oak pulpit are the three dimensional figures of Christ (center), with St. Peter at His right hand and the Apostle Paul on His left. The style and carvings echo those on the new church altar, created in the same period. So cherished are these fine pieces, that the congregation incorporated them into the chancel design for construction of a still larger sanctuary (dedicated in 1993).

Richard Wallace:Luther High School-Orlando Luther
Various images of Richard Wallace, who served as Principal, administrator and teacher for Luther High School(later known as Orlando Luther) for about a decade beginning in 1985-86. Having served as a Presidential appointee on the prestigious National Commission on Excellence in Education (which produced the white paper, "In Search of Excellence"), Wallace also brought valuable experience in revitalizing other Lutheran High Schools in the midwest. He will be remembered for his humility, his extraordinary personal commitment to "saving the school" during a precarious point in its history and his deep love and concern for the students and faculty. The school publication ("Shield") was dedicated to his name twice during his tenure at the school.
