    Church Resolution Renaming St. Luke's Church Cemetery. August, 1965

    A resolution of the Board of Directors of St. Luke's Lutheran Church was filed with Seminole County in Florida on August 27, 1965. Signed by Ferdinand Duda, Sr. (Secretary of the Board), this document was filed as a request to change the official name of the church's cemetery grounds. Previously shown in county records as "Slovak Lutheran Cemetery," the congregation (having already changed its name from "St. Luke's Slovak Evangelical Lutheran Church" to "St. Luke's Lutheran Church"), now wished to change the name of its cemetery property to "St. Luke's Lutheran Church Cemetery" in the official county records.

    Committee Meeting in South Transept of Church. 1990

    A church committee meets in the south transept of the church, which (until 1986) had been used for the pastor's and staff offices, a radio broadcast room and sacristy. When this transept was remodeled to allow seating for more Sunday worshipers, it was also used for practice space for the Handbell Choir (bells can be seen arranged on tables at the rear) and for a variety of meetings, until the transepts were vacated and then demolished in 1991 for the church expansion project.     The confirmation class of eight students, with Pastor Stephen M. Tuhy, on the south side of the new brick church on May 19, 1940. Left to right (front) is Ellen Svrlinga, Lillian Jakubcin,Blanche Duda, Betty Mikler. Rear (left to right): Andrew Mertan, George Mertan, Dan Lukas and Steve Mertan. This was the first Confirmation to be held in the new brick church. As was the custom, the confirmands were required to undergo a verbal examination, answering questions from the Catechism, before the entire congregation. This was done at the worship service on the previous Sunday, March 12, 1940. The confirmands all had to "pass" this exam in order to become confirmed members of St. Luke's the next week.     The 1993 Confirmation Class assembled in front of the "stained glass" display created by Ruth Wiedenmann for the east wall of Founders Hall(gymnasium), where the confirmation service was held. The 1957 church had already been demolished and the new sanctuary was under construction. For a period of almost 3 years, all worship services and special commemorations were held in the gym. Members of the class: Leah Becknell, Robyn Brooks, Jennifer Cabana, Megan Coles, Laura Cruch, Andrew Dettro, Larisa Fiadini, Michael Gully, Anne Marie Hrncir.     Confirmation of Ferdinand Duda, Lakewood, OH. July 22, 1923

    The Confirmation Class of Pentecost Lutheran Church, Lakewood, OH, on July 22, 1923. Ferdinand Duda, son of Andrew Duda, Sr. (founding family of Slavia and St. Luke's Church) is shown on far left in back row. The Andrew Duda Family helped to found St. Luke's in 1912 and purchased farmland through the Slavia Land Company in 1911, But they returned to Ohio from 1916-26 to earn more money to capitalize their future business in FL. During that period, they lived in Lakewood, OH and attended their old church (Holy Trinity Slovak Lutheran Church in Cleveland) until a new congregation in Lakewood was formed. Ferdinand was the youngest child of Andrew and Katarina Duda. He was born in Europe (Slovakia), April 22, 1909 and died in Slavia on September 17, 1996.

Marian Katarina Stanko (left) and her sister, Johanna Blazena (Jennie) Stanko (far right) pose with their uncle and aunt, Juliana and Martin Stanko and their young sisters, Betty (left) and Ann Stanko, in the chancel of the (1939) brick church, following their Confirmation ceremony. Officiant: Rev. Stephen Tuhy. The Stankos were one of the Founding Families of Slavia and built a store and gas station to serve the Slavia community in 1926. Marian grew up in the home attached to that store and served St. Luke's School as a teacher before marrying Rev. John Obeda. Jennie ultimately married Mr. Hugh Cotton. Members of the Cotton family still play active roles in St. Luke's congregation. The two youngest sisters, Betty and Ann, were raised in Cleveland after the premature death of their mother, but were visiting Florida on the occasion of their older sisters' confirmation at St. Luke's. 5x7 glossy print scanned on Epson 1000XL at SLLC, November, 2011.
