    Mrs. Juliana Stanko (far right) poses with husband, Martin, and niece, Marian (2nd from left), along with two unidentified visitors to the Stanko's store in Slavia. c.1950s. Martin Stanko was a key figure in the establishment of Slavia, but did not become a full time resident until 1926. At that time, he retired from a successful business career in Cleveland and, with his wife, Juliana, moved to Slavia and built the general store and gas station which they operated for another 3 decades.     Taken by an unknown photographer, c. 2006, this image appeared in a 2006 calendar distributed by The Oviedo Preservation Project. It shows the building, erected c. 1926, in which Martin and Juliana Stanko operated a general store and gas station until Mr. Stanko's death in the 1950s. The Stankos resided in the rear portion of the structure. 8x10" page from TOPP calendar, dated 2006.

    The rear (west) wall of the "cry room" in the 1957 brick church held a tract rack and a guest book, which visitors were asked to sign. This photo was taken in 1991 before the reconstruction of this area (now known as "the chapel").

    A studio photo of the wedding of Adam and Mary Klimek. Location unknown. c.1915. The Klimeks are considered to be one of Slavia's founding families. Adam had a presence in the church and community in the early years and visited often with his wife (the sister of Mrs. Paul Lukas, Sr.) and three sons. Both Mr. and Mrs. Klimek returned to Slavia to enjoy long lives together at the Lutheran Haven Retirement Center: Mr. Klimek died in 1987 at the age of 97; Mary lived for another six years and passed away at the age of 94 in 1993

She died on Sept. 26, 2009 and is buried in St. Luke's Cemetery. The wedding took place in the first brick church, built in 1939 and the wedding photos of the church as it appeared at that time may be the only interior photos ever taken during a wedding ceremony before the church was radically altered in 1957. 5x7" reprints scanned on Epson 10000 at SLLC, April, 2012.

Emily Jakubcin, the bride and groom, Milan Jakubcin, George Jakubcin, Jr., Ferdinand (Zeke) Jakubcin, Tom Brown, and Robert L. Ward. Flower girl on left is Debbie Jakubcin, the other is unidentified. Following the ceremony, guests walked to the school auditorium nearby and enjoyed food served at the reception while seated at long tables. Neither the new sanctuary nor the auditorium were air-conditioned in 1957.

    The wedding of Rev. Stephen M. Tuhy and Olga Pankuch

    The wedding of Rev. Stephen M. Tuhy to Miss Olga Pankuch took place at St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Wilkes-Barre, PA on June 7, 1936. Officiant was the father of the groom, Rev. Stephen Tuhy, Sr. In a somewhat damaged old snapshot (found in 2012), the newly weds stand at the far right. Other members of the wedding party are unidentified, but it is known that the group included one or more of the groom's brothers. Rev. Tuhy had very recently accepted the call to become the first Pastor of St. Luke's church. He brought his new bride to Slavia to live in the new parsonage built for them by the congregation. It was erected adjacent to the space on which the first permanent (brick) church would be constructed in 1939. Sepia (damaged) photo scanned at SLLC on Epson 10000XL, November, 2012.
