Mariner 7 far encounter picture No. 6 of Mars shows a remarkable webbed network of light lines in the Tharsis and Arcadia regions (upper left portion of the planet). That structure is identical to that first resolved by Mariner 6. It has not been seen from Earth, even though the resolution in this picture (about 50 statute miles) is thought to be only slightly better than the best obtainable from the Earth. In addition, the picture contains various electronic artifacts, most of which will be removed by computer processing of the numerical data from which this picture was constructed. The picture was taken on August 2, 1969, from a distance of more than one million miles.
