Description/Abstract

Mentorship can serve as the structural framework for an undergraduate research journal’s operations. Using the Florida Undergraduate Research Journal (FURJ) as a case study, this presentation examines mentorship embedded in author feedback and editor training. We argue that this layered approach professionalizes student participants while also ensuring the journal’s own continuity. We first situate FURJ within the broader landscape of student research journals, considering how such journals are typically structured, the evidence for their educational value, and the sustainability challenges that most often threaten their survival. We then examine FURJ’s mentorship structure in detail—its review rubric and staged review process, and the roles of the Student Editorial Board and Editorial Assistant.
