Abstract
In this workshop, participants will gain hands-on experience using Scroll Cinema, a visual editor for creating dynamic, interactive works of e-lit that use scrolling as a primary input. The toolset requires no programming experience and makes the creation of scrollable, animated content in the style of A Modern Ghost, Device 6, and The Boat simple and intuitive.
Scroll Cinema opts for minimalism — think of it as a streamlined version of Unity combined with After Effects, optimized for simple scroll gestures of the web. See your initial ideas come to life in just a few minutes, then dive in further to master the tool’s depths:
- Configure text and image sequences using an animation timeline - Instantly see those creations in a web browser - Create triggers for audio soundtracks - Configure simple clickables and gameplay logic - Define autoplay segments to create cinematic moments - Drive the final experience with a simple touch or scroll of a mouse
Participants will be guided through Scroll Cinema’s interface, gaining insight into the various innovative genres encompassed by the concept of “scrollies,” or scrolling movies — from animated poetry, to multimedia webcomics, to simple adventure games.
Participants will be able to download ZIP files of their experiments, and optionally publish their work for private or public viewing on AltSalt.com.
Via this workshop, participants will gain practical skills for creating their own scrollies.
Example scrollies:
- A Modern Ghost (https://www.altsalt.com/scrollie/a-modern-ghost/3236/)
- OnChain Mecha (https://www.altsalt.com/scrollie/onchain-mecha/1000/)
)
Use of Scroll Cinema is free for participants.
