Description/Abstract

Community colleges face unique challenges and possess distinct institutional goals when implementing undergraduate research (UR) compared to four-year universities (Brown, Higgins, & Collins, 2007; Campo et al., 2026; Hensel & Cejda, 2014; Hewlett, 2021; Hirst, Bolduc, Liotta, & Packard, 2014). Despite the growing recognition of UR's benefits, there remains a critical lack of community college-specific resources, tools, and dedicated dialogue for UR practitioners. To address this gap, we (three FURA board members along with two community college colleagues outside of Florida) are developing the National Two-year Undergraduate Research Network (NTURN) to share targeted resources, tools, and ideas specific to the needs and challenges of UR at two-year institutions.

This workshop introduces NTURN’s foundational goals and facilitates an interactive stakeholder dialogue. Our session aims to: 1) gather insights from community college representatives regarding specific, unmet needs in their UR initiatives; 2) solicit feedback from university representatives on the UR skills and experiences they most desire in transfer students; and 3) brainstorm how two-year and four-year institutions can better partner to leverage their unique resources. Ultimately, the workshop will explore how NTURN can support and sustain these cross-institutional partnerships to enhance the UR landscape as well as provide a clearinghouse of best practices, resources, and tools and act as a communication hub addressing UR at two-year institutions.
