Learning Objectives
The Design Thinking Cards prompt instructors to design AI-infused pedagogies that foster critical thinking, problem-solving, and human-AI collaboration. In the workshop, participants left with:
• A draft project plan with goals and milestones.
• New ideas and shared strategies from peers.
• A roadmap of CTL support, including consultations and networking.
Strategy Description
This paper introduces Design Thinking Cards as a facilitation tool to support educators in creating AI-infused learning experiences. Grounded in human-centered design, the cards integrate two complementary frameworks: the Human-in-the-Loop (HITL) principle and the Design Thinking model developed by Stanford’s d.school. HITL highlights the role of human oversight and feedback in shaping machine learning processes, while Design Thinking emphasizes iterative problem solving through the stages of empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test. By combining these approaches, the Design Thinking Cards guide instructors through iterative cycles of developing, refining, and implementing generative AI teaching projects with learners at the center of the process. This human-centered and iterative framework not only encourages creativity, empathy, and collaboration but also positions both educators and students as active agents in the conceptualization loop of AI-enhanced pedagogy.
